Nose
Immediately, notes of smoked ham arrive on the nose, followed by fruity cherries and prunes. All wonderfully wrapped in peat smoke. Behind this, vanilla and a discreet herbal note, primarily mint, emerge.
Palate
Sweet on the palate with dark caramel, raisins and vanilla cream followed by almost sticky dark fruit jam. Wonderfully mouth-filling with warming alcohol and wrapping peat smoke.
Finish
The finish is long lasting with dark caramel, dry oak, ashy smoke and a subtle herbal note.
With water
Slightly fresher on the nose with toffee and plum after adding water. The peat smoke is more present, whereby the fruit sweetness is pushed somewhat into the background. Sweetness, smoke and caramel on the palate, with lots of plums, raisins and vanilla cream. Slightly less warming. The finish is still long and creamy with jammy fruit, a touch of smoke and some dark chocolate.
Comments
A powerful and multi-layered bottling from St. Kilian Distillers, which was allowed to mature for four years in fresh Hungarian oak. The result is a full-bodied single malt with dark fruit notes, creamy vanilla sweetness and warming peat smoke with very well-integrated alcohol.
I thank St. Kilian Distillers for the complimentary sample!
