3 Sherry Hogsheads, 1 ex-Bourbon Barrel

Nose

Typical aromas from the sherry casks: rum raisins, dates, maraschino cherries and blackberries. Herbal notes, black tea and coffee are added. The alcohol is very well integrated.

Palate

Thick, sweet and creamy on the palate at the beginning with raisins, cherries and blackberries. Then warming and clearly dry with herbal notes, dark chocolate, coffee and some nutmeg. Very mouth filling.

Finish

The finish shows a nice length with creamy fruit notes, herbs, christmas spices and espresso.

With water

Considerably more herbal and coffee aromas after adding a few drops of water. The fruity notes are noticeably tamed and pushed into the background. Fairly warming on the palate with sticky fruit, dark chocolate and lots of herbal notes. The finish is still long, creamy with fruit, coffee and nutmeg.

Comments

This independently bottled Bruichladdich single malt from the Elements of Islay series is packed with typical sherry flavours, dark chocolate and warming spices. The distillery character as well as the influence of the Bourbon barrel are hardly noticeable. A bottling that will probably please sherry aficionados much more than Bourbon fans.
